The rice fields are very impressive and look like great chains or ribbons as they wind from the foot to the top of the hill.
Reasons to go there
Pingan is definitely worth a visit. If you come at the right time of the year, when the paddy fields are wet or filled with young rice, the views are absolute magic.
The Pingan village is build on a hill slope. The road stops a few hundred meter from the village. The last part you have to walk yourself.
It’s a great idea to head for one of the viewing points to watch the sun rise or the sunset. The so called Dragon Backbone is really beautiful.
Helpful Tips
The most popular rice terraces in the Longji area are: PingAn Rice Terrace and Jinkeng Rice Terrace. In Pingan there are two main spots: Viewpoint 1 and Viewpoint 2.
The best time for a good photo is in early June, when the paddies are pumping with water, the villages are transfering young plant of rice from the seed bed to large areas of rice terrace. Or September when the rice terraces are deep green.
You will almost certainly want to walk; either around the village or further. If you have a short time or the weather is not at its best, try a hike to Longji. The hike to Dazai will take about 5 hours and you should think about taking a guide. There are other hike options but these are the most popular, and rightly so.
How to get there
The Longsheng Rice Terraces are located in Longsheng County about 100km from Guilin. It’s a two hour bus ride (6.5Y) from Guilin bus station to Heping (you don’t need to go to Longsheng), then another 30 minutes up to Pingan Scenic area and a 10 minute climb up to Pingan village.
The village is high up on the mountain. The nearest road is narrow and twisty. Visitors by car must park a the bottom of the hill and take a minibus to the upper car park. From the upper car park, you must ascend on foot. There are sedan chairs available for hire if you are not up to the climb.
Additional Infos
Longsheng is home to four minority nationalities: Miao, Yao, Dong and Zhuang. The Yao nationality live in Longji. They have distinctive clothing and hair styles which set them apart from other ethnic groups. Yao women are famous for having the longest hair in the world. They never cut their hair. Instead they wrap the hair in a bun on top of their head in a style resembling an Indian turban.
