Along the 100-kilometer stretch of the Li River (Lijiang), mountain peaks rise into the sky. It is one of China’s most famous scenic areas.
Reasons to go there
The area around Yangshuo is renowned throughout China, and probably the world, for its Karst landscape where there are hundreds of limestone hills dotting the countryside.
A Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the highlight of any trip to Guilin. Gorgeous Karst peaks give you new views at each bend of the river. The lime stone mountains build and picturesque scenery.

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo takes about 7 hours.
If you don’t want to go on a mass tourist ship I suggest to go to XingPing by bus and make local cruise on a small boat. At Xingping you will see the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery of water and mountains.

How to get there
There are various modes of reaching this stretch of the Li River. You can catch a direct river cruise from Guilin. You can also get to Xingping by minibus from Yangshuo bus terminal, or cycle out there and then take boats or bamboo rafts to reach the scenic area. Combinations of the various modes are possible.

One of the advantages of visiting the Lijiang River is that you do not have to worry about the change of the weather, since the views of the Lijiang River have different characteristics in different weather conditions: you can view the inverted images of green peaks in sunny days or view the clouds covering the hills in overcast days and view the misty rain of the Lijiang River in rainy days.

Thanks for your blog. I’m planning a trip to that region in late August. From what I read, it seems that Yangshuo has all the breathtaking scenery and one can simply skip the Lijiang river cruise to save time and money. So I’m thinking of bypassing Guilin altogether. What is your opinion comparing Guilin with Yangshuo?

Hi Dana,
we stayed in Yangshuo. If you want to save money i would suggest to take a bus to Xingping and make a boat trip there. Between Xingping and Yangshuo it’s most impressive. But you should do a boat trip, it’s another perspective than from Yangshuo itself.
Bypassing Guilin is a good idea. It’s mainly a big city.
